It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of our friend and colleague, Norm Smith, Middle and Upper School faculty member, and beloved member of Gerstell Academy.
Born in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains in southeastern Kentucky, and resident of Westminster, Maryland, Norm died suddenly August 29th, 2009 at Carroll Hospital after suffering an abdominal aneurysm. He was the son of Lois Ann Hoskins Smith of Grays Knob, KY and the late John Henry Smith. He attended Tennessee Temple University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Pastoral Ministry. Later he earned his Master of Arts from Bethany Divinity School.
He will be missed by his Gerstell Academy family, most notably his colleagues and peers within the middle and upper schools who were privileged to teach and interact with him on a daily basis. Norm was beginning his third year of teaching leadership at Gerstell Academy, and was responsible for developing a robust advisory program and contributed greatly to the development of a unique leadership curriculum for students in both middle and upper schools.
Norm was instrumental in forging a yearly leadership cultural review which engaged our teaching community to understand fully the importance of culture, and encouraged those around him to engage in the furtherance of our leadership mission.
Exemplifying the Gerstell mission, leadership principles and attributes, he was truly the heart and soul of the middle and upper school leadership program. Norm had a passion for leadership having learned the truth of the maxim "everything rises and falls on leadership". He was frequently heard saying "It's all about the kids", and positively influenced many students by coaching both basketball and golf.
He was dearly loved by all of the Gerstell Academy students, providing guidance and mentoring for our young adolescents at a time in their lives where there are often more questions than answers. He made those around him feel as though they were better individuals after having spent time with him. One student remarked about his teacher Mr. Smith: "… all teachers have their favorite students but Mr. Smith made us all feel like we were his favorites."
Prior to coming to Gerstell Academy, Norm Smith founded a non-denominational church, leading it for 13 years. Norm Smith made a positive difference and contributed greatly to the Gerstell community.
He is survived by his wife Susan, and their two sons, Tyler and Luke.
