It's been a year, and still I miss you no less. I love you and miss you so much, Dad. Deanna & I went on a hike today in your memory. You would have loved it. Easy ride out of town, with a 3-mile crazy, steep, cliff-edged, bumpy, dirt-ridden road down to the trail head. A beautiful path along a fork of the American River...the sound of rushing water was our musical backdrop. An easy hike, with trail markers indicating certain flora and fauna of the region. The out-and-back path ended at a waterfall, which was dry at this time of the year, but was beautiful nonetheless. We ate lunch at the tide pools left by the waterfall, in the shade amongst the wild blackberries. At the end of the hike, back at the beginning, we took off our shoes and strode into the still cold water. Deanna remembered the wishing stone ceremony from our wedding, and we each made a wish upon a stone which we tossed far into the stream. Her wish, which she said aloud, was for me to take every wonderful aspect of you and all the good things I've learned from you, and to incorporate them into my life so that not only I but others may benefit from your wisdom. My wish was a private one between you and me, but I know you heard it. I am learning to live without you in my life, but it has not been easy. I love you.
